My Story by Elizabeth Smart with Chris Stewart, 305 pages
I am always a little afraid to read survivor books. I always think I will be too shocked to get to the end. But, what I found in this book, is that it was truly inspirational. I am not sure another person could have survived what Elizabeth Smart was put through. I was afraid there would be too much detail, but what she wrote was just descriptive enough to know what she actually went through.
On June 5, 2002, Elizabeth Smart was taken by knife point from her bedroom in Salt Lake City, Utah by Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee. She was forced up a mountain side to a campsite where she was chained. She was forced to marry Mitchell in a cult like ceremony. What I did not know was that her family had encountered Mitchell a year earlier on the streets of Salt Lake City. Elizabeth was forced to do unspeakable things.
Elizabeth makes a point through out the book that her kidnappers not only threatened her but threatened to kill her family if she tried to escape. Elizabeth was forced to go without food and water for days. She lived in filthy conditions. It is amazing that eventually she convinced her kidnappers to allow her to accompany them into the city. She had to keep her face covered with a veil. The weather forced them to move to California. It is miraculous that eventually they made their way back to Salt Lake City. Elizabeth was confronted by a police officer when she finally felt safe enough to confess who she was.
Elizabeth Smart's story is one of faith and courage. Her faith and beliefs got her through her darkest days. She writes in her book that she never needed medication or therapy after her ordeal, which I found incredible. This book was truly inspirational!!
