Pledged: The Secret Life of Sororities by Alexandra Robbins- 384 pgs.
I wasn't in a sorority in college, but had several friends in them, so when I saw this book on someone's Goodreads page, I thought I would check it out. Pledged follows four women, who are in two different sororities, over the course of a year. A lot of the stereotypes about sorority girls are played out in the book. For example, alcohol use and promiscuity, but there are some surprising tidbits as well. Several girls talk about feeling lonely in a house with a hundred other girls and about having misgivings about joining their sorority. The book goes into detail about the rush process of bringing new girls in to the house and sheds a little light on what goes on during chapter meetings. Interspersed with the girl's stories, Robbins also talks about minority sororities and the impact of sorority life after college. Knowing that not every sorority is like the ones presented in the book, it was still an interesting read and makes you wonder why people would go through some of the experiences presented in the book to join a group.
