Doughnut by Tom Holt

Doughnut by Tom Holt, 400 pages

Theo Bernstein is having a bad day in an increasingly bad life.  Once you blow up your workplace which happens to be the Very Very Large Hadron Collider, there really is no going back to work as an experimental physicist.   Bernstein discovers that he was left a legacy by his former mentor that will reveal his true destiny, and yes that destiny involves doughnuts...plus a lot of string theory and interdimensional travel.  Believe it or not, this is all results in a very funny and darkly humorous book in the tradition of Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams.
