The Hunchback of Neiman Marcus by Sonya Sones, 421 pages
Written entirely in poem form, this is a novel about marriage and motherhood. This is a book about Holly, a writer from California, who is facing menopause at the same time her daughter is leaving for college, 3000 miles away. Sonya Sones writes as the character which seems so similar to her that as the reader, I sat there and wondered is this her life or the characters? This novel is very well written and the poems or verses flow from paragraph to paragraph and from page to page. It is much different than just reading page after page of a novel or page after page of poetry. The words just flow. The poems effectively communicate how Holly feels about growing older, becoming an empty nester, living with just her husband, and dealing with her mother's illness. Maybe, I enjoyed this book because I am close to the author/character's age and am going through similar situations in my own life. A very enjoyable read about life changes!
