In the Garden of Beasts, by Erik Larson

In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin, by Erik Larson, 464 pages

This book chronicles the time spent in 1930s Berlin by the American ambassador to Germany and his family.  I thought this was a fascinating depiction of a time and a perspective that we don't often hear.  How did Hitler and the Nazi party gain such power, when we can see with hindsight all of the warning signs?  While no book can ever answer that question adequately, Larson's descriptions of appeasement, warnings unheeded, and the impotence of the American ambassador lend a bit of understanding.
