Luther: The Calling by Neil Cross

Luther: The Calling by Neil Cross - 336 pages

Luther began as an excellent television series by the BBC which aired in the US on BBC America with the character of  Luther being played by the phenomenal Idris Elba.  The tv series opened with police detective John Luther facing a moral choice about letting a heinous criminal fall to his death or trying to save him.  The choice made at that moment shaped the direction Luther's life took from that point forward.

This book is essentially a prequel to the tv series which leads you eventually to the moment in the series opener.  All of the wonderfully wounded characters spring to life from the page as vividly as they did on television.  The plot opens with Luther investigating the kidnapping of a baby cut from the mother's womb.  It quickly spirals into a high profile case with both professional and personal pressures driving Luther to some very dark places.  There is graphic violence but it is not gratuitous.  I highly recommend both the book and the tv series.
