The Magician's Elephant, by Kate DiCamillo, 201 pages
I thought this was a cute book, with elements reminding me of Hugo Cabret. Peter is a young boy being raised by a gruff ex-soldier, who took Peter in after his father died in battle, and his mother died giving birth to his sister, who was stillborn. But when a fortune-teller comes to town, and tells Peter that his sister is alive and an elephant will lead him to her, the impossible becomes the inevitable.
