Barney is terrified one day while on the way home from school when a ghost appears with the message "Barney is dead. I will be so lonely.". Fortunately for him, it turns out that it is his Great Uncle Barney who has died. Unfortunately, this sets into motion the return of Great Uncle Cole who everybody has long thought dead. It seems that Cole is a magician determined to take Barney away with him as the new family magician.
I've enjoyed several of Margaret Mahy's supernatural teen books. I thought I would hunt out some of her other books after hearing of her death this past year. This is one of her stories for children. I enjoyed the story. It was well done with the twist at the end being well incorporated into the story.
