Little Butterfly, Vol 1, by Hinako Takanaga

Little Butterfly, Vol 1, by Hinako Takanaga, 184 pages

This is the first bit of yaoi I've read, but any fan of manga knows that the Japanese are not afraid to talk frankly about gender identity and sexuality.  The story is pretty simple: Nakahara is an outcast who keeps to himself and doesn't have many friends. Bubbly, outgoing Kojima sets out to befriend Nakahara, who doesn't make it easy.  Nakahara has a very troubled home life, and he runs away after confessing to a flabbergasted Kojima that he loves him. Kojima is shocked, but comes to realize that his feelings for Nakahara go beyond friendship, too.  It's a really sweet, innocent story of young love.  I would recommend it to teens and adults alike- as long as they understand first what yaoi means.
