Winter's Bone by Daniel Woodrell, 193 pages.
Winter's Bone is a dark, depressing novel written by Missouri author Daniel Woodrell. The story takes place in the Ozarks in the winter. It tells the story of teenager Ree Dolly who takes on the search of finding her missing meth making father who has skipped bail. Ree must set out to find her father before the court date or the family will lose the posted money and their house. Living already below the poverty level, Ree struggles to care for her two brothers, her mother, and best friend, Gail all while trying to find her father who she first assumes has run off to be with his girlfriend. Along with her Uncle Teardrop, Ree finds out the truth of what happened to her father. I found the dialect in this novel hard to understand. But yet, I could not help root for Ree as the underdog and admire her for her loyalty to the Dolly family and giving her family hope for a better life, despite all odds against them.
