The Sneetches & Other Stories, by Dr. Seuss, 65 pages
I'm going to say something potentially unpopular: I never liked Dr. Seuss as a child. He just didn't do whatever it is good children's stories usually do to a person. But what with it being his birthday and all, I thought I'd give him another chance, with this collection of stories. And I have been converted.
"The Sneetches" is an excellent story about some sneetches who have stars on their bellies being treated better than those without; but when a stranger comes to town and offers to put stars on the bellies of the star-less, the fun begins. Call it a metaphor for racism or classism- either one works, and creates a whole different depth to the story than I could ever have understood as a child. Even better? The story "Too Many Daves," about a woman with 23 sons all named Dave. The Dr. proposes a few names she could have used instead. Cute and fun, it has also provided me with several ideas for future cat names. Personal favorite: Marvin O'Gravel Balloon Face.
