Ready Player One, by Ernest Cline, 384 pages
It's the year 2044, and 18 year old Wade Watts escapes the ugly real world by retreating to the OASIS, a virtual game world more real than the real one for most people. The creator of the OASIS hid his fortune somewhere in the OASIS, and Wade is out to find it before the evil corporations can.
It sounds like another dystopian sort of adventure, but this is made so much more amazing by the fact that the whole book is basically an homage to 1980s pop culture. Oh, this book has They Might Be Giants lyrics being important? I'm listening. References to Wil Wheaton and Cory Doctorow being voted president? Go on! Epic battle between Supaidaman and Mechagodzilla?? Convinced!
While they might need to look up 50 percent of the references (I did), this might be appealing to teens as well as adults.
