The author is a British classics professor who explores the characteristics that made a variety of widespread Mediterranean communities Greek. She credits them with being inquisitive and willing to innovate. The ancient people that emerge from this book appear self-reliant in their sea-faring expansion and open minded in their pursuit of the best life. The book also provided some insight into the importance of classical literature to the Greeks.
